The Children’s Museum of St. Johns Hosts A Kid’s Triathlon April 12
by Wendy Philcox

St. Augustine, FL — In partnership with the St. Augustine Family YMCA, Just Tri It!, a triathlon for children ages 6-12, will take place on Saturday, April 12, 2008. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Children’s Museum of St. Johns, a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization. The triathlon will consist of a swim, a bike ride, and a run, with distances adjusted for each age group (6-7, 8-10 and 11-12).  The starting point for the triathlon will be the pool at the St. Augustine Family YMCA, 500 Pope Road in St. Augustine Beach. Kathy Weed, president of the Children’s Museum of St. Johns, explained the positive influence completing the triathlon could have on young athletes. “Completing the physically- and mentally-challenging feat of swimming, biking, and running deserves to be rewarded,” she said. “All participants of Just Tri It! will be awarded medals for their achievement, regardless of their finishing times.” Two training clinics will be held approximately two weeks prior to the race in order to familiarize parents and athletes with the course and other logistics of the triathlon.  Read the rest of this entry »

CMSJ Hosts Public Roundtable Discussions

February 11th, 2008

The Children’s Museum of St. Johns Hosts
Series of Roundtable Discussions Open to the Public.

“The purpose is twofold,” comments CMSJ board member Jennifer Koppman, coordinator of the roundtable events. “It’s a chance for us to present the vision and concept behind the museum and lay out a proposed timetable for making it all happen. But, it’s also a chance to brainstorm and invite ideas and feedback from the public.” Koppman also plans to personally invite key leaders from the various St. Johns County communities such as city and county administrators and elected officials, school board members, and elementary school administrators and staff, with a request that these individuals help the museum’s board gain awareness about their communities

Ancient City Kids Day Provides the
Perfect Venue for Children’s Museum of St. Johns

by Wendy Philcox

After cancellation of the late October family fest due to a drenching nor’easter, organizers at EPIC rescheduled for Saturday, December 8. Children’s Museum of St. Johns set up their tent and became a “Museum Without Walls”! More than 700 children and Boy with Masktheir families attended the event and visited the booth featuring their “Walk Like a Timucuan”  exhibit, featuring three different hands-on activities for kids.

First, kids assembled and donned a multi-dimensional mask based on an authentic Florida panther mask worn by our area’s first inhabitants-the Timucua Indians. Award-winning exhibit designer and graphic artist Charlene Cross based the design on a painting entitled “Panther Warrior” by local artist Theodore Morris, who gave his permission to use it as a model for the mask.

IMAX IS BIG

January 18th, 2008

By C. J. Godwin

IMAX is big!!  It’s so big you can see Peter Parker’s contact lenses in the IMAX release of Spiderman 2.  Oooops, wasn’t he supposed to ditch those glasses for the improved eyesight afforded by his new superpowers?  I feel betrayed by the super sizing of standard films, blown up to Brobdingnag proportions for the big big screen.

Easter Egg

April 13th, 2007

Yellow Egg

By David Brainard

This Easter our family traditions have suffered, probably because we spend all our energy taking care of our six month-old son. For instance, after church we usually hide painted Easter eggs for our dog to sniff out. Back in the pre-baby days, we might hide ten of these carefully painted eggs around the yard, but this year, we only had one. A single, yellow egg. It wasn’t much, but it would allow us to say that we’d kept the tradition going, even at our most sleep-deprived. Read the rest of this entry »

PREP TIME

March 16th, 2007

By C. J. Godwin

God bless the vegans; they work hard enough at it.  I understand why they’re so given to meditation.  They spend all of their time chopping vegetables!  Plenty of opportunity for reflecting during then.

I am not a vegan.  I’m not even a vegetarian, but I am certainly unopposed to a good vegetable melody unaccompanied by an animal broth, and I have fromagavore tendencies, especially around wine.  I have adopted a lowered-meat lifestyle, though, because I enjoy the mass mutilation of the garden variety.  Mostly I do it for the health benefits.  I figure I burn enough calories in the exercise of executing vegetables that I can go back to drinking non-diet soda.  Read the rest of this entry »
